Can you Repair a Rotten Wooden Garage Door Section?

While wooden garage doors look beautiful and elegant when you maintain them well, these doors are also more susceptible to changing weather conditions and inclement weather that is likely to wreak havoc on these smooth wood panels.

However, if you notice any water damage, bowing, rotting, or other problems with your wooden garage door panels, do not worry. The good news is that you can easily repair wood rot damage to wooden doors in order to restore your door to a better condition.

Take these steps to repair your wooden garage door without ordering a costly replacement door.
1.      You should cut out the quarter round carefully on the inside of your garage door. You can do it by scoring it repeatedly using a utility knife. You can also use an oscillating tool for this purpose.
2.      When you have removed the quarter round from the borders on the interior side of the door panel, you can easily knock out the panel using a hammer. You should hammer from exterior to the interior as you didn’t remove this quarter round from the exterior.
3.      Once you have identified rot in the door, the next step is to get rid of all the affected wood. You only have to cut out the rotted section of the wooden garage door.
4.      When you have removed the panel, you may take a chisel in order to smooth and tidy the area where this panel was installed.
5.      Now, apply one coat of a wood hardener to the area that you smoothed before the installation of the new panel. Note that this step is important as it will protect your wooden garage door from water penetration and prevent rot.
6.      If you have to cut the new panel, you can cut it to size using a circular saw or table saw. On the other hand, you may have it cut to size when you buy it to eliminate this step.
7.      Now it is time to prime and paint the new piece of the wood panel. The next step is to fit this new piece of panel inside the hole. You can use caulk and some finish nails in order to attach your quarter round back and secure it firmly in place.
8.      You can caulk around the exterior sides of the panel for more protection.
